Double Deep Pallet Racking

What kind of Warehouse needs Double Deep Racking ?

  • Products with more than one pallet per Stock Keeping Unit (SKU)
  • Non-perishable stock, where first in first out does not need to be strictly adhered to

What is Double Deep Racking?

With double deep pallet racking, two pallets are placed in the same aisle, one behind the other, offering immediate access to the front pallet. The rear pallet can only be accessed once the front pallet one has been removed. As the rear pallet has a lower access ratio, this creates a LIFO (Last In First Out) storage system. This double deep pallet racking system requires specialized equipment, such as extendable or telescopic forklifts, and generally, requires slightly wider aisles.

Why is Double Deep Racking?

Since pallets are stored in a two-depth configuration, the number of aisles in the warehouse can be reduced.  The space saved by requiring less aisles means that additional racking can be accomodated in the available floor space. This enables a double deep racking configuration to offer a highly space-efficient storage system operating on a first in, last out (FILO) system.

Although the speed of accessing all pallet locations is limited because the pallet closest to the access point needs to be removed to access the pallets in the second row, an effective inventory management system can easily compensate and enable businesses to Increase productivity by taking advantage of increased storage densities.
